Moonee Valley Racecourse |
Moonee Valley
Racecourse was started in 1883 by a man named William Cox. He purchased
a horse farm with the intent to build a racecourse for horse racing.
Moonee Valley is a uniquely shaped race track, the starting points vary widely from race to race. It can be a deceptive track for a jockey to ride, thus knowledge of the course itself can often lead to victory. Moonee Valley Racecourse is located in Melbourne, Australia. It sits in a suburb of the City of Moonee Valley itself. See Map below. Moonee Valley is home to some of Australia's richest and most prestigious Horse Races. Some of these races include the Manikato Stakes, William Reid/Australia Stakes, Alister Clark Stakes, Sunline Stakes, Cathay Pacific Gold Cup, and Jayco Crystal Mile. Also run at Moonee Valley is the Granddaddy of them all, the W S Cox Plate, named after the founder of the racecourse. This is one of the most coveted trophies in all of Horse Racing and most especially so in Australia. |
The Cox Plate (also known as the Tatts Cox Plate) is a legendary horse
race run annually in Australia. The race was started in 1922, when the
Moonee Valley Racecourse decided to run a race to honor the founder of
the racecourse, William S. Cox. The race is considered a Group 1 race, which means it is of the highest quality available. It is run at a distance of 2040 Metres. The prize money on offer is currently slightly over $3 million AUS Dollars. The Cox Plate offers the 2nd highest purse of any race run in Australia. It is second only to the Melbourne Cup. Some famous winners of the Cox Plate include Phar Lap (1930 & 1931), Strawberry Road (1983), Sunline (1999 & 2000) and So You Think (2009 & 2010). |
