This colt by Candy Ride looks dangerous in this years Derby. This lightly raced colt is unbeaten in 3 lifetime starts, including last time out in the Santa Anita Derby. He is trained by John Sadler, who rarely sends a horse to a big race that is not ready to run. He is quickly learning the game and at the right time. Regarding his second lifetime start in the Pasadena Stakes, Sadler said. “He did everything wrong in the Pasadena, and he still won,” describing the race as a valuable teaching experience. “It started in the paddock. I could barely get the saddle on him. He just had that second race jitters.” What seals the deal for me is the switch to top jockey Joel Rosario. This one is my top contender to wear the blanket of roses this year.
This colt owned by Godolphin Stables and trained by Bard Cox, is full of quality being a son of the great sire Tapit. He is a grey horse on a mission to win the run for the roses. He will come into the race a perfect 5 for 5 (unbeaten). With impressive wins in the Breeders Cup Juvenile and Toyota Blue Grass Stakes he will be one of the likely favorites at post time. However, neither of these races have produced a ton of Derby winners, so that is a detriment.
Hot Rod Charlie is aptly named because he likes to show early speed which he can carry for a long way. His last time out in the Louisiana Derby he carried that speed all the way to the winners circle. He is a son of Oxbow who has himself a Preakness winner. He is a strong contender and has the right jockey on his back to win it. He will be ridden Flavien Prat after Joel Rosario chose to ride Rock Your World.
The winner of the Florida Derby is always a prime contender to win the Kentucky Derby. This years winner was Known Agenda, he is sent out by top trainer Todd Pletcher. Who amazingly has 4 horses in this years Kentucky Derby. This one looks to be his best chance to win it all. Pletcher recently said that he looks to be improving, which could set him up nicely on Derby Day. He is also by the champion sire Curlin, which is yet another reason to like this colt.
He was the upset winner of the Arkansas Derby, which is a major prep race for the Kentucky Derby. He beat Concert Tour impressively that day, who was once a big hope to win the Derby. He is by the sire Dialed In who has not produced many stakes winners however. He does have the right trainer in Steve Asmussen to be a contender. He has a chance to win, but I think that others are better.
